I’m Lia, a German-Argentinian social worker with a master's degree and a freelance illustrator. Due to my working experience with migrant people and my life experience as a bicultural person, I have high communication and adaptation skills. Code-switching and flexibility regarding language and gesture are very familiar to me. The ability to put myself in someone else’s shoes and to find creative solutions for communication barriers has always been one of my crucial tools. As an illustrator, of course, I also believe strongly in the power of visual communication and it always has been a way to communicate when words started failing. I think, language barriers are a challenge, not an obstacle!

As a tutor I try to adapt to the needs and interests of the students. I want to pick’em up where they’re standing language-wise. Besides being empathetic, patient, creative and flexible on content, I want the lessons to be fun! Especially regarding the preciseness and seriousness that the German language tends to represent, I think humor is a great tool to make it more accessible and easygoing. Another thing that makes learning German more fun, is to focus on topics that are relevant to the student. But having fun doesn't mean that success is secondary. My conversation practices are outcome-oriented according to the goal the student wants to achieve. We'll work on an audible improvement! :)

Mijn lessen en manier van lesgeven

My lessons are conversation practices for intermediate and advanced speakers. I will give priority to their needs, interests and goals and I will focus a lot on interaction to build up their confidence in the new language. While the feeling of progress is crucial to stay motivated, I also want to create a relaxed chat situation where you learn along the way. So my teaching style is informal and open-minded first, and I'll rather provide a casual conversation than an amplified grammar lecture. Nevertheless, I will use diverse and short material inputs to support the learning process and to give content orientation if needed. Of course, I'm happy to include any material or content proposals!

This was my first time trying a lesson on Italki and I'm still figuring out my options among tutors, but I had a great time with Lia! We had an example lesson to practice speaking. Lia was friendly, easy to talk to, and flexible with conversation topics.
