Over mij
italki leerkracht sinds 22 Nov 2016
Marhaba! I studied computer science at Damascus university. Since my graduation in 2012 I worked as a software developer until I found iTalki where I found my passion. I love reading (poetry in particular), sports (not watching though), calligraphy, and I have a limited experience with playing Oud (an amazing oriental musical instrument). Also I have some successful attempts with crochet and sewing clothes. In short I'm interested in everything artistic and beautiful!
Ik als leerkracht
Beside teaching on iTalki I work as a private tutor here in Istanbul and I also work on different projects for teaching both standard and spoken Arabic. Some of these projects are:
• Arabic Workshop: an audios & videos library for learning MSA. I work as a script writer and assist in curriculum development
• Fluent Forever: a platform where you can learn a vast number of languages. of course one of these languages is Arabic. I work with them on developing a course for teaching Syrian Arabic dialect
• Conversations Unbound: an NGO that connects students from American universities with Arabic tutors. I work with them as a board member as well as a tutor.
Mijn lessen en manier van lesgeven
There is no magical plan that works for everyone. Each one of us is unique! That's why I tailor individual plans for each student depending on their level and interest. It doesn't matter what your level is or how old you are, you will speak and build your confidence from lesson one.
I use videos, songs, books, and podcasts. Don't be surprised if I ask you to sing sometime!
From time to time you'll have a project to do and after each lesson you'll have homework to keep up the Arabic until the next lesson.
If you're a university student, of course you have read "Al-Kitaab". I have good news for you! I teach from this book to students from more than one university.

Keuze van de leerkracht
I've now completed 100 Lessons with Alaa. It has been an excellent experience- we've also met on my recent visit to Istanbul. My language acquisition has jumped massively and I feel I can now have a heated discussion in Arabic...yay! I even find myself thinking in Arabic at times.
Alaa is really well read on a wide range of topics and we have discussed topics from the ancient arabic texts and fables, all the way to modern culture, medicine, engineering, current affairs, news articles, environmental issues, etc.
He is usually encouraging of me expressing an opinion, which I feel pushes me to be more expressive.
Studying English and Turkish himself, it has been interesting at times to discuss how the different languages work and we often discuss how jokes work in the different languages.
I would definitely recommend him, particularly if you've reached an intermediate level and you're not sure where to go from here.
