I first started teaching English to Colombian refugees that came to New Zealand in 2008. This was really the beginning of my love for languages and teaching English.
I then began helping migrants coming to New Zealand, helping them to obtain fluency and confidence in English.
As a teacher I excel because I help my students to feel confident and supported, and able to make mistakes without fear of judgement.
I am patient with my students, and I always try to find their interests and encourage them to speak freely and uninhibited about topics they love. Mijn lessen en manier van lesgeven
My teaching style is based on a conversational approach. I try and make my lessons based around as much conversation as possible.
I don't want my students to be feeling fearful of making mistakes, thinking about grammar rules or worrying how their accent sounds. I encourage them to relax and just communicate to the best of their ability.
I can set homework, where students can read, and listen intensely, and study grammar if that is their wish, but when its iTalki time with me, I want them to practice conversing as much as possible.
This is the method that works for me, and I'm passionate about sharing this with my students.Mijn lesmateriaal

The best English conversation I've ever had! Richard is so kind and easy to talk to. He is a good teacher as well as an experienced language learner. He understands problems that we may have in learning new languages and will give us tips to tackle it. The conversation moves at a pace that is comfortable. I enjoyed talking to Richard and would recommend everyone to give him a shot!

I’ve had a wonderful class with Richard. I felt 100% comfortable and relaxed, and that helped me practice my speech (which is my main goal) in a very productive way. At the end of the class, Richard gave me wonderful advice that helped me realize where am I in my practice, and where should I focus my attention to keep progressing.
