I have been teaching English for over 20 years, and Macedonian and Serbian for about 5 years. My classes are student centered, so my priority is to assess what the students need and what their learning style is. Once I find out what is important for the students, I tailor my lessons to them and personalize my instruction. The most important factor for me in learning languages is to enjoy and have fun during the process.

First and foremost I am a learner who enjoys learning languages as a hobby. So I understand the frustrations and challenges faced by students when they try to mesh the theoretical aspects of acquisition with the realities of speaking practice. I have written a language course for those tackling German and my approach with beginners is to introduce new language in a very structured way and to prioritise patterns above vocabulary, at least at the start. For more advanced students I am happy to select materials based on their interests. I always try to put people at ease and believe that learning should be an enjoyable as well as enriching experience.

I have been improving my teaching methods through years by attending seminars in different fields and trying to find the easiest possible way to help my students learn a foreign language effectively. I like being a teacher because at the same time I teach my students and learn from them as well. So while I'm only on Italki as a community teacher, I do actually have some training in how to teach English. I have also taken part as a native English speaker on a Diverbo residential course, spending an entire week with individuals wanting to improve their English. This involved one-to-one conversations, group activities, conversations at mealtimes, etc. with the non-native speakers. My accent is British English, but I am familiar with many of the words, phrases, and spellings that differ between this and American English.
