About Me
italki teacher since Feb 21, 2021
Hello!
My name is Caleb Gonzales, I am a graduate student in the University of Pennsylvania TESOL program, and have some experience in tutoring and teaching ESL classes, as well as tutoring Spanish at the college level. While I am at the outset of my career as a language teaching professional, I am very excited to begin working with others to build their abilities in both Spanish and/or English, as well as building my own skills as a teacher. In short, I love language learning in the same way that an artist or musician love their own art, and I hope to impart some of this love for language learning in others. If you have any interest in language learning, I would love to work with you!
Me as a Teacher
As a lifelong student of languages and a newly minted teacher, I remember well the types of teaching styles that did not work for me. I strive to provide the type of teaching experience that I would have wanted when I was a student, that is, fun, engaging, interesting, and useful lessons. Of course, this does not mean that all lessons will be easy, as some topics are indeed difficult, however, I believe that flexibility on the part of the teacher can go to great lengths to modify and recast explanations of material, so that even the most difficult concepts can be grasped by any student.
My lessons & teaching style
I believe that teachers, particularly in a small group or one-on-one setting should be highly attentive to the needs and strengths of the students, and should never attempt to hold to a rigid curriculum or lesson plan, particularly when it is clear that it is not beneficial to the student. I prefer to find the most enjoyable and effective lesson and exercise types, playing to the strengths and interests of the student in order to facilitate meaningful language instruction. Any aspect of language can be addressed through a topic that is interesting to the students, whether it be difficult grammatical structures, obscure vocabulary, or advanced discourse, there's no need for it to be boring!

During our lessons, we discuss extremely interesting current topics such as Cancel Culture, carrying weapons, vaccination, economy, etc.
It is very stimulating to exchange our points of view and to discover new expressions.
