About Me
italki teacher since Jul 23, 2019
Hello! As someone who loves experiencing new cultures and interacting with all types of people, I've had a very fulfilling time teaching English over the last few years. I'm a friendly and easy-going American from the Boston area. I truly enjoy meeting people from all different cultures.
Some other activities that I enjoy include basketball, American football, surfing (though it needs some practice) and speaking Spanish (which needs practice tambíen). I'm a bit of a travel addict and can't wait for my next trip.
Me as a Teacher
When teaching English, I always find it beneficial to instill a relaxed feel, at least during certain portions of the lesson... The goal, after all, is communicating in English, and sometimes going "off-script" and having fun is the best way to make that communication happen.
I use classic worksheets when drilling new vocabulary or grammar, but for me nothing beats using real sources like articles, videos or even movies. As someone learning a language myself, I know there's nothing better than interacting with the language as it's designed for native speakers! I'll also provide plenty of material and suggestions for using English beyond our lessons.
My lessons & teaching style
My favorite thing about private lessons is that it allows me to really focus on each student and individualize their learning. In the first lesson I hone in on my students' interests as well as their language needs, and from there I find my brain working around the clock on new, creative lessons for them. I mentioned that I love using primary sources... So many times I'll be reading the news or watching YouTube and suddenly realize "This (article/video) is perfect for (Filippo/Daisy/Marta/Student X)!"
While I vary the difficulty- sometimes simple to encourage my students, other times challenging to push them- I lean towards the challenging end of things.
