This was a lesson in which Martina’s command of English was particularly helpful because I was trying to translate some quirky American English terms into Italian and she understood exactly what I was talking about. We also spent some time on an area in which I’m weak: pronouns - subject, object, direct and indirect.

Martina is an amazing tutor! She is really helping me with my Italian. Today we went over adverbs and pronunciation. She is very patient and gives lots of practical tips for learning languages.

This was a particularly challenging lesson. Martina had me listen to and read through the lyrics of a song that talks about modern Italian society. The song included a lot of slang expressions.That, in itself, was challenging but what was especially interesting and difficult was discussing broad themes about the nature of modern society. That requires a lot of thought just to talk about in English, much less another language. Once again, Martina was very patient as I struggled through this and she gave me a lot of helpful suggestions. I finished feeling good because it was a thought provoking lesson and one that stretched me in both languages.

Our lessons are challenging because they get me to think about and talk about more complex subjects than the weather or what I did on the weekend. So it pushes me to expand my vocabulary and find ways to convey what I want to say. The articles Martina suggests for our lessons are excellent at stimulating different ideas and reactions.
