When a child is born in Italy, people usually hang up a ribbon or a garland outside the front door of their house and of the hospital room where the mum is staying with the newborn. The ribbon is of the colour of the baby's gender (blue if it's a boy, pink for the girl). The ribbon means there's a baby there. People also hang it to bring good luck to the newborn and the family he or she is living with.
