Über mich
italki-Lehrkraft seit 11. Dec 2020
I am a Hong Kong-Canadian music and language educator. I live in one of the largest Cantonese communities outside Asia and I grew up watching HK film and TV, listening to Cantopop, reading Chinese news, and perusing the secret menus of Cantonese-speaking restaurants. I was able to retain an inordinate amount of Chinese due to immersion and persistence. I was also lucky enough to have opportunities for early exposure to English, French, and Mandarin. It taught me at a young age that learning new languages is dynamic and human. I love food and I love talking about it. Cantonese food in particular holds a special place in my heart.
Ich als Lehrkraft
I understand the struggle of mastering Cantonese in Western society as English is my strongest language. This gives me a unique perspective as a teacher and translator. I’ve provided lesson formats that reflect what has helped me preserve Cantonese in Canada. I have experience teaching music 1-on-1, customizing lesson plans for students, and want to apply these skills to Cantonese education. I believe in establishing good fundamentals, and also flexibility and creativity. Learning is a lifelong journey; mastery of a dialect as dynamic and poetic yet fun and malleable like Cantonese is no exception. Establishing an internal monologue, no matter how simple, is key in learning this language.
Meine Stunden und mein Unterrichtsstil
Along with conversation practice, I like to explore languages in ways that we already use in our daily lives. YouTube, social media, recipes, and song lyrics are all excellent ways for us to explore practical use and nuance using familiar platforms. I'm very easygoing and I like to keep a casual but structured environment in my lessons. I respect students' boundaries but I’m happy to answer any questions they have in return. I'm able to type in traditional Chinese with Cangjie at a moderate pace, and I use LSHK Jyutping. I may customize worksheets if I believe it aligns with our learning goals, but establishing a student’s own curiosity and resources is more important to me than homework.
I loooove learning Chinese characters through Cantonese songs, so far it's the best way for me to recognise new words! It's also a great way to learn more slang and cultural references :)

I learned a bunch of amazing Cantonese idioms in today's lesson, as well as venturing into how to specify dietary requirements and explain my personal ethics of why I eat certain things and not others. Great lesson as always :D

It was great having wide ranging conversations about stuff I do and am interested in so that I can get better at talking about those things. Also I wrote down a bunch of words and phrases I hear all the time in YouTube videos but don't really know how to use myself, and we went over how to use them in different contexts, which was super helpful!
