Growing up I was certain I'd become a fashion historian.
Or a veterinarian, a human rights advocate, the editor in chief of british Vogue or a coffee shop owner.
I was sure I'd do ~something~ , but teaching did't quite make the cut. I stumbled upon this profession completely accidentally, and as far as accidents go, this one is by far the most whimsical.
I get paid to talk to incredibly interesting humans from all over the Earth WHILST explaining them cool things about languages. In my book, it doesn't get better than that!
Ich als Lehrkraft
I can do all the things you expect a teacher to do, but I see myself as a mirror:
your improvement and progress is entirely up to
~ you
~ how enthusiastic you are about the language you study
~ and your motivations.
In our conversations, the environment is always a welcome one. Make mistakes. Take your time, express yourself freely. After all, most of the interaction with a tutor is never about the subject you learn,
but about the connection you have and how comfortable you feel.
Make decisions as to how you want the lessons to go;
a teacher is a resource, so use it to your advantage.
Meine Stunden und mein Unterrichtsstil
In order to progress, you need to have a crystal clear goal as to ~ w h y ~ you’re learning a language.
This is how you help yourself get to this goal quickly and efficiently,
but you also let your teacher know the best way they can help you.
And like with any other skill, learning requires patience and practice.
There has never been, and there never will be a quick fix or magic method to this.
*pro tip*
After you’ve done some language studying, go to sleep.
Thank me later. :D
