I'm a native English speaker from Sheffield in northern England: since April 2016, I've been living in Portugal. Back in the UK, I had many different jobs, all of which had clear communication in common - in the last 30 years I've been a civil servant, an actor, a pub manager; I've worked in customer service, dealing with the public on the phone, by email and in person. I've also sung in a couple of bands and I was a comedian for a while! I have a passion for the English language: over the years I've written lyrics, poems, short stories and plays, and I love music, film, literature and comics. These days, I'm lucky enough to have found my favourite job: here on italki as a community tutor!

PLEASE NOTE: I don’t teach children and I don't teach outside my scheduled hours. I’m learning Portuguese, so I know how scary using a second language can be. Back in the UK, I had a lot of experience of correcting letters, emails, reports and presentations: even though I have no formal training as a teacher, I can help if you’re working towards exams or looking for a job – or if you’re simply learning English for pleasure. I'm here to help you master the art of conversational English, to gently point out the right words to use, the proper grammar, the correct pronunciation. I'm not here to criticise or put you under pressure: I want you to enjoy our lessons and above all, have fun!

我的課程內容與教學風格

I'm a community tutor, rather than a professional teacher, which means that my lessons are informal and led by you, the student. We can talk about whatever you like: films, music, TV programmes, books, travel, current affairs, food, you name it – but I might struggle with sport! Or you can pick an online article and read it to me, and I’m happy to help with new and unfamiliar vocabulary, phrasal verbs, idiom, tenses, pronunciation or intonation, and afterwards, we can use the subject of the piece as a starting point for a chat! I can assist you with any written work you have produced, too – I can make suggestions about style and sentence construction, and we can have fun in the process!
