Seven years experience in the language industry. I received training as a teacher of Filipino as a Foreign Language from Sentro Rizal, the official government institution promoting Filipino culture globally. I am also doing an MA in Araling Pilipino (Philippine Studies: Language). I did a teaching internship in a youth project in Romania and then studied in Indonesia and Colombia under scholarships by the Indonesian and Colombian governments respectively. Currently, I am a member of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). For my day job, I work as a Learning Specialist for a company that provides language and intercultural training to international companies.

我的教學經歷

Having grown up in the province of Laguna, I am absolutely in love with the Tagalog language. It connects me to my deepest roots and it is a home I always carry. I have teaching experience in colleges and language schools, as well as privately to corporate clients, diplomats, travelers, and entrepreneurs. Being in the field of Philippine Studies, the classes go beyond language. You can expect a teacher with expert knowledge on Philippine linguistics, history, culture, and society. Also, as an avid language learner involved in different polyglot communities I can help you navigate the world of language learning.

我的課程內容與教學風格

The classes are based on the communicative approach. Our goal is to be able to use Filipino (Tagalog) to communicate in a variety of contexts such as making small talk at a family gathering at home, discussing a travel itinerary while on vacation, or narrating a plot of a favorite movie over dinner. Apart from applying techniques and principles of second language acquisition, we will incorporate language coaching strategies throughout your program. We will set achievable goals, formulate an effective learning strategy, and build healthy habits to help you reach fluency.

Lessons with Carmela are always absolutely fantastic! I'm a heritage learner with loads of language learning experience and already spoke in another Filipino language. Carmela adapted straight away and we've gone at a pace that suits me perfectly! My level in these lessons have gone from zero to being able to hold a conversation on a variety of topics very quickly and we're now expanding on verbs to make our conversations more and more complicated. I love grammar and Carmela answers all my grammar-related questions with great examples. After every single lesson I leave with a wealth of knowledge and excited for our next class!!

Always a great and FUN lesson! I had to take a few weeks off with my new work schedule, but Carmela was great (like always) with gauging where I was with my Tagalog and how comfortable I felt picking the language back up. She is the best!
