I have years of teaching experience, teaching English as a foreign language most recently in Tanzania, the U.K and now here in Italy. I have taught in various environments, from formal school settings (teaching students the Cambridge International Curriculum at an international school: GCSEs, A-Levels, as well as CAE English Speaking tests), right through to more informal lessons teaching both in person and online, as well as teaching at international language schools, language centres and summer camps.

As a teacher I’m guided by a line from Don Quijote, “Cada uno es hijo de sus obras.” (“We are all the children of our accomplishments.”) and an anthropological observation that “education is identity change.” Learning is more than the acquisition of new skills, it’s the emergence of a new identity. I first saw it in my dissertation research, and then I began to see it everywhere. Learning anything new, especially another language, means becoming someone new. These insights continually challenge me to offer relevant instructional opportunities that allow learners to experience themselves engaging in new practices that they can then convert into newer versions of themselves.
