I have been teaching English for seven years to over 100 students in the UK, Australia, Spain, Thailand, China, Turkey and India. I have taught students from 5 years old up to Masters University level. I specialise in teaching essay writing, conversational English and IELTS and TOFEL exam preparation.

I started teaching in 2009, when I began tutoring Dutch teenagers who needed some help with their Dutch, English, German or French lessons. In 2017, I decided it was time to broaden my horizons and start working for Italki as a community tutor. Now that I've acquired my TEFL Certificate as well as a Master's Degree in Child and Education Studies, I feel ready to offer you even better services! Aside from teaching on Italki, I also have experience as a classroom teacher at an international school. I am a CELTA-qualified teacher with 6 years' experience working privately with adults from intermediate to advanced level. I specialise in Pronunciation and I can help you recognise sounds (with your ears and the phonetic symbols), physically and technically produce them and I can also show you the rules for choosing the right sound based on spelling. I love teaching the many quick tricks that English pronunciation and grammar have in order to understand the logic of the language, so once you have mastered those elements, you can focus on expanding your ability to express yourself accurately and in a more nuanced and colourful way, which is what makes languages fun and empowering.

I'm a native English speaker from the USA who's certified to teach English. I graduated college with a Bachelor's degree in Science and a minor in Arabic. I've been teaching English online for several years. During this time, I had the amazing chance to work with children and adults from all levels. I also greated enjoyed helping students crack exams such as the TOEFL, IELTS, SAT, and GRE.

I became a teacher because I love to watch people grow. More than simply transmit linguistic knowledge, I hope to encourage, empower, and learn from my students in whatever way I can. I like to connect with my students on a personal level and I aim to build a virtual classroom based on mutual respect and shared interests. During secondary school I taught many younger students subjects such as English Literature, German, Economics, History and Music Theory. Such experience allowed me to familiarise myself with the subtle skill of teaching - a skill which I will likely be learning far into the future. I have since completed both a 168 hour English Teaching diploma with the International TEFL Academy and an additional 30 hour course which specialises in how to teach English online. I have been in education for more than 20 years, and have worked as a translator and private tutor throughout that time as well. Languages are my passion, so much I have learned several languages (Spanish C2, German B1) and begun working on a third (French A1). I understand the joys and frustrations that come with learning a foreign language and want to walk with you as you take on English.

I like for my students to understand and the best way for students to understand is by teaching them in a way that grasps their attention. I am a very understanding teacher and like to apply each student differently, according to how I see fit based on what they reveal to me. I have professional experience teaching languages in schools, as well as teaching lessons online and for my local council. I am trained specifically to teach languages, and I have experience teaching both English and Japanese to learners of varying ages and levels. I particularly like to teach English Literacy and Pronunciation, helping students to build their vocabulary and speak boldly and confidently. I like to have a goal for every lesson so that students can measure their success objectively and progress with confidence.

I'm very patient as I know what learning a new language is like. What I want, is that you feel free to make mistakes while you practice so we can learn from them and improve on those areas. I found that if you are not making mistakes when learning a new language, you are not actually learning.

I have lots of fun discussing and explaining German words, phrases and sentence structure. I have been supporting language learners on Italki since January 2019. In the past I have lived in many countries. Whenever I am back home in Germany I go back to driving an abulance. My students appreaciate my slow and clear speech. I am very patient - I dont mind repeating myself over and over again :) Repetition is essential. I encourage students to make mistakes as they catalyse the learning process.
