À propos de moi
Professeur italki depuis le 14 Jul 2017
I am an online English teacher with a 120-hour CELTA certification and hundreds of hours of experience on Italki. My work here focuses on conversation practice, test preparation, writing and editing, and literature. I come from a background in business journalism and college teaching. My classroom experiences included teaching English and philosophy courses to inmates of Nevada state prisons through a program offered by Carson City-based Western Nevada College. I also taught at Feather River College in Quincy, California where I was on the adjunct faculty. I did my CELTA training in New York City. I'm a native speaker of American English.

It was a wonderful lesson! Mike is a super-professional English teacher. He not only explains well but also feels when the student finds it difficult to answer and selects simpler words and expressions. Thanks a lot to Mike for your patience and your time! Sincerely, your student, Sergio! I recommend this teacher to everyone!

According to Schopenhauer, art, especially the work of genius is more essential to the world than science. Art repeats the eternal Ideas apprehended through pure contemplation, the essential and abiding element in all the phenomena of the world. Whilst science can never find an ultimate goal or complete satisfaction. If the process of discovering scientific truth is likened to removing the lid of a nesting doll, then something is certain. That is we will for sure witness smaller ones constantly being revealed, while the smallest one, the holy grail of science, is unlikely to be seen one day. On the other hand, till now, we still enjoy Shakespeare’s dramas, Beethoven’s symphonies, Michelangelo’s sculptures and Picasso’s paintings. Those eternally beautiful things, art treasures, even as old as obelisk, Egyptian hieroglyphs, ancient Greek sculptures, Chinese oracle bone script, are still appreciated.

Schopenhauer is pessimistic when he discusses the results of desires. He embraces a viewpoint that all willing springs from lack, from deficiency, and thus from suffering. No attained object of willing can give a satisfaction that lasts and no longer declines; but it is always like the alms thrown to a beggar, which reprieves him today so that his misery may be prolonged till tomorrow. Unfortunately, as human beings, we inevitably have desires. So the point is how to harness desires. According to Confucianism, the answer is minimizing the scope of desires. When you know where to stop, you have stability. When you have stability, you can be tranquil. When you are tranquil, you can be at ease. When you are at ease, you can deliberate. When you can deliberate you can attain your aims.
